Does inReach rely on the same satellites for its GPS and communication capabilities?

No, the inReach GPS and satellite communications components rely on different sets of satellites. The GPS component, which attaches your position coordinates to any messages you send and also enables remote tracking, relies on the Global Positioning System, maintained by the U.S. government. Communication capabilities rely on the Iridium satellite network.

How does inReach differ from what is currently available in the marketplace?

inReach is the first, consumer-affordable satellite communicator that allows you to send and receive messages from anywhere in the world to any cell phone number, email address or to another inReach device. inReach uses the Iridium satellite network to send and receive messages, provide delivery confirmation, and connect with emergency services with 100% global coverage and no blackout zones or fringe areas. Other available devices in the marketplace offer only one-way communication – meaning you cannot receive any message replies -- or are very expensive voice-based satellite systems.

Is inReach water resistant and dustproof?

Yes, inReach meets the International Protection Rating of IP67, also referred to as Ingress Protection. The first number represents the level of solid particle protection; inReach's value of 6 means that it is dust tight. The second number represents the level of liquid protection; inReach's value of 7 means that it will withstand immersion in liquid up to 1 meter for 30 minutes.

If my inReach breaks under warranty, whom do I contact?

For troubleshooting support, inReach has a "Help" function built into the device. Select "Help" from the main menu and search for solutions to common questions. If you continue to have issues, go online from your computer to manuals.delorme.com for a full user's manual. If you can't find answers to your questions through the inReach device help or the online user manual, visit support.delorme.com. To get personalized Tech Support, go online from your computer to reach Customer Care – our team is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. (Eastern Time, US).

What kind of battery is in an inReach and how long does it last?

If you are planning to be off the grid for an extended period of time, we suggest that you carry a solar charger with you. The battery in the inReach SE is a 2,450 mAh capacity at 3.7 V. The inReach SE has been tested to last 100 hours, based on transmitting one track point every 10 minutes with a clear view of the sky. Actual results will vary based on individual usage based on the level and types of functions you are performing on the device. The inReach battery charging temperature range is 32 F to 113 F (0 C to +45 C). The original inReach 1.5 model runs on two lithium AA batteries and provides about 125 hours of continuous operation at the 10-minute tracking interval with a clear view to the sky. inReach 1.5 also supports the use of alkaline and nickel metal hydride (NiMH) batteries. Using these batteries with the same 10-minute tracking interval delivers 75 hours with NiMH and 72 hours with alkaline.

Can I use inReach to post to social media?

Yes. You can post messages to Twitter and Facebook from your inReach when you link your social media accounts to your Delorme Explore account.

Are there maritime or roadside assist options?

inReach has a built-in emergency function that will connect you with with the primary first response agency in the area closest to your reported coordinates. inReach provides two-way messaging with emergency personnel that will coordinate with any additional resources that may be required for your rescue. In a non-emergency situation, use your inReach to message with your contacts or to alert organizations that provide roadside assistance. Your GPS coordinates will be embedded in the message you send, making it easier for these organizations to find you. DeLorme has also partnered with BoatU.S. to provide Towing Assistance service for an additional fee. Plus, all BoatU.S. members get a discount off the purchase of a new inReach.

Is there anyplace where inReach won't work?

inReach uses the Iridium satellite network with 100% coverage, so you are connected everywhere in the world as long as you have a clear line of sight to the sky. Iridium is the world's largest satellite constellation and offers high network reliability and low-latency satellite data connections with end-to-end message delivery in less than 60 seconds anywhere on Earth.

If you're in a deep canyon or an unusually narrow mountain pass, you may not have the direct line of sight to a satellite. inReach has been tested successfully under heavy forest cover, even triple canopy, but it is possible that in some locations the canopy may be dense enough to block line of sight. In these situations, you should move to a more favorable location and try again.

What is Iridium?

Iridium is the world's only satellite network with 100% global coverage and two-way communication capabilities that other satellite providers can't match. Iridium is powered by a global constellation of 66 cross-linked Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites that provide data connections over the planet's entire surface.

Does the product comply with the European Union REACH Position?

REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals) is a European Union chemical regulation that became effective on June 1, 2007. We support the objective of REACH of improving the protection of human health and the environment through the early and improved identification of the intrinsic properties of chemical substances.

Some inReach products and accessories contain SVHC’s at concentrations above 0.1 percent weight/weight. A listing of the products and accessories with the specific SVHC’s is provided below. We are working with our suppliers to identify alternatives to DEHP.

We will be communicating further with our suppliers and customers to continue to gather information to ensure our continued compliance with the REACH regulation. As such, we reserve the right to make changes to our products and this information as additional information becomes available.

Can I send and receive SMS text messages in any country?

inReach is capable of working anywhere in the world, however, there are some locations where in-country SMS carriers may offer limited or intermittent service. If you encounter SMS issues, please let us know and we will contact the in-country provider(s). The ability for inReach to send and receive messages via email or during SOS mode works anywhere in the world, as email and SOS messaging is not conducted through SMS service providers.

How can I use inReach with my iOS device (iPhone, iPad, iPod touch) or Android device?

inReach connects wirelessly with iOS and Android devices via a Bluetooth connection. In order to use your inReach with your Android or iOS device, you must download the free DeLorme Earthmate app from the online Google Play site or the Apple App Store first. Earthmate allows you to do almost everything on your mobile device that you can do on your inReach SE handheld device, but with greater convenience and access to topographic maps and U.S. NOAA charts. For the original inReach 1.5 model, pairing with a mobile device is required in order to compose and send custom text messages. To learn more about Earthmate, visit our support site.

Is inReach compatible with all Android phones?

The inReach for Android is compatible with Android phones running version 4.1 or later firmware. Functionality is enabled by the free DeLorme Earthmate app, available online from Google Play.

Can I still use the original inReach model (without a screen) if I don't have an Android or iOS device?

Can I broadcast messages to other inReach users (for example, to set a new location for the group to meet)?

Yes, you can communicate directly with other inReach users who are in your Contacts list. Make sure you have your friends' contact information loaded into your device using your Delorme Explore account or by pairing your inReach with a mobile device that includes your friends' contact information.

Share a link to your MapShare page with your family and friends so they can see your coordinates and your track line. Set up your Mapshare page on your Delorme Explore account and make sure your inReach is set to send your location updates directly to your page. What is the benefit of two-way text messaging?

When you send a message to someone, it is important that they can text you back if they have questions or need to alert you of a change that would impact your journey, pick up point, or other critical information. inReach allows you to send and receive messages so you can keep your friends and family updated about your travels, and they can keep you updated about important information from home. Your friends and family will be comforted by your updates when you're in a remote or high-risk environments, and you can be alerted to any emergencies or updates from your loved ones or co-workers.

How are SOS messages delivered?

Send an SOS messages by pressing the SOS button. Your alert will be relayed to GEOS, a 24/7, global search and rescue monitoring center, and then to emergency responders. Emergency personnel will send you a text message asking you to describe your exact situation so they can properly prepare responders and maintain contact with you until you've been brought to safety. If you are unable to reply to GEOS, help will still be dispatched immediately.

Who is contacted when I need help?

When you send an SOS, the message is received by a 24/7, global search and rescue monitoring center called GEOS. A trained expert in emergency communications will confirm receipt of your distress message and attempt to contact you through your inReach and coordinate help with the primary first response agency closest to your reported coordinates. The search and rescue monitoring center will also notify the emergency contacts loaded into your inReach Explore account, so it is very important that you include people who are capable of receiving and handling an emergency call.

How long does it take for outbound messages to be delivered and inbound messages to be received?

Your message will usually reach the recipient's email inbox or cell phone in a minute or two. Occasionally there may be delays due to atmospheric or other conditions, but in those instances the lag time could take up to 20 minutes. In very rare cases, delivery may take longer due to the line of sight of the satellite's position. inReach automatically checks for incoming messages every 20 minutes, or when you send a message or tracking interval. In SOS mode, the satellite will check for return messages from the Response Center every 60 seconds during the first 10 minutes and then at the same interval that the SOS track points are sent for the duration of the rescue.

Can I activate my inReach device if I am in a place without internet access?

No. Because your device will require access to the online Explore portal, an Internet connection is required to perform the initial set up and activate your inReach.

How long does it take to activate my inReach?

Activation is usually very quick and takes less than 10 minutes, but in some rare cases it can take approximately 20 minutes. Turn on your device and follow the on-screen instructions for setup. You'll be promoted to create an account at explore.delorme.com, enter your IMEI device number an authorization code, and then select your satellite airtime plan. Activation of your inReach with the Iridium satellite network is a one-time step that uses a different process than standard inReach functions. Please be patient while your inReach communicates with the Iridium network for the first time.

What are Quick Text Messages and Preset Messages?

Preset Messages let you send a message you created ahead of time to a list of people you specified when creating the preset. You can send this message with just a few button presses. A Quick Text Message is a message you know you'll use often when replying to or sending messages, and you don't want to type it each time. Send it with just a few button presses. Create all of these messages on your Delorme Explore account.

How do I set up MapShare?

From your Delorme Explore account at explore.delorme.com, click on the MapShare tab. Set your MapShare preferences to enable the page, to allow visitors to send messages and view your location, and to give your page a title and a description. After saving the changes to MapShare, you can email a link to your friends and family along with an explanatory message. Note that you can also send a link to your MapShare from your Android or iOS device when you are on your trip, just in case you forgot to let someone know until you were already traveling.

Can I put privacy settings in place on my MapShare page?
