It's official: "Ascent Planning" = v7.07's Grade Shading

Just an FYI: Like @JungleJim alluded to elsewhere, the "feature" advertised as Ascent Planning is actually Grade Shading that was added to the v7.07 firmware update. This is according to Garmin themselves at Garmin's H1i Plus forum. Good call @JungleJim.

Currently on the eTrex Touch and GPSMAP H1 series, Ascent Planning is available during Course and Activity review in the Saved app, you can enable grade shading to highlight climbs along the route.

Hopefully Garmin will improve the features in the coming updates. As it is now the feature is a bit underwhelming, the name "Ascent Planning" kind of promises more. But marketing probably wrote that text.

Still hoping for the ClimbPro feature seen on cycling computers and sports watches making its way to the eTrex Touch and H1/H1i Plus...
