Action Button not working
The action button on the side of my unit has ceased to work
Press it and it does nothing
Has anyone else encountered this?
I have tried different function choices for the button but to no avail
Rebooted etc still nothing
I am on firmware 4.09
If no one has encountered the issue would I be dealing with a hardware failure?
Any thoughts please ?

Re: Action Button not working
Try using the H1's Diagnostics page to test the keys. The directions at the link below state that there is a specific area within Diagnostics to do just that. Look for the "Key Test" area when in Diagnostics. If the key does not respond in Key Test, it's likely hardware related. If it DOES work under the test, the unit may need to be hard reset due to a glitch in the firmware (or similar).

Re: Action Button not working
Are you seeing a 'Lock' icon in the status bar when the Action Button does not respond? Device may be locked, requiring you to first press the power button to unlock it, before the Action button functionality is restored.
Also: Make sure both the Software Version and Host Software Version numbers match each other in Settings > System > About. Action Button changes were made in the last firmware update, and if the update did not complete properly, this may be the issue.

Re: Action Button not working
Thanks for all the advice.
Findings.
The device failed the key press test. I ran it twice. Same result, it was the only key that did not work.
The device is not locking when I tap the action key. The device remains unlocked throughout.
None of the expected actions happen when you press the action key.
I ran a hard reset and the button still does not work.
I checked the numbers on the software pages and they are the same.
This is only happened in the last few days. I did have to reinstall 4.09 before (see separate posting) apart from this all seems to be well since
Is it worth trying to reinstall 4.09? If I do will I use all my User data?
Or
Is it a call to Garmin Support on Monday for a new unit?
Thanks in anticipation
Mike.

Wow, that's a bummer!
If it failed the hardware test, it is time for new hardware from Garmin.
I hope this was a one time event and does not become a trend....
We will be watching!

Re: Action Button not working
The Action Button microswitch is attached to the main PCB via several solder joints only.
Can you feel any resistance or click when pressing the Action Button? Does it feel any different from what you previously remember? Any internal rattles from that area when shaking the device?
For future reference, can you share with us the 'Version Info' from the Diagnostic Menu > Device Info? Tip: You may want to take photos of these pages to compare with your replacement device.
Hardware failures of this nature are actually pretty rare for Garmin, but they can happen.
Thank You!

Re: Action Button not working
I attach images of the button test, and the version data etc, over two pages
No rattles but the key seems “softer” than before. It doesn’t decisively bottom out. Just stops
When you press all the other keys, there is a definitive end point to the travel but not the action key
Critically when pressing all the other keys, I get a click from the sounder. Not so with the action key.
I replaced a screen on an Oregon 750 T not so long ago and am familiar with the type of buttons fixed to the PCB. They were small on /off switches where the outside rubber case under a “button” presses on a little button in the centre of the pcb switch
There is no decisiveness or crispness in action on My H1 activity button
Hope this helps

Re: Action Button not working
As a matter of nostalgic interest if nothing else I attach an image I found of an Oregon 750T motherboard
I have arrowed the Two side on switches that I guess work like the H1 Action button
The latter will be fitted in the edge of the motherboard, I guess as well

Re: Action Button not working
OK, your device has a v7 PCB. Will be interested to know what version it is replaced with!
Yes, the microswitches are similar to the Oregon 7x0, but sit much farther in from the sides of the device.
