Think of the odometer on the gps to work as tho non-changable odometer in a car, even if one drives around on the yard and dont want this to be included in the distance, it will. Most car users cannot and would not reset that odometer.
On the gps unit, use the trip meter instead, which can be reset independently of the recorded track/activity.
You can record a track/activity or use the stopwatch on the device if the device has one.
