Addendum:
I performed a full reset from the unit (Delete All) and after the .fit files restore, here are my findings:
Home Screens and their assigned apps, and these kinds of higher-level settings were restored properly. What is not restored are system-type lower-level settings like Barometer settings, Compass settings, Units, etc. What exactly is not restored is unknown to myself. These are just some of the settings that are not restored. I'm sure there are many others.
So the unit will still be to be setup manually somewhat after the restore.
I have also tried backing up & restoring the *.db files on the unit as well (again, copying to the NewFiles folder) but this didn't seem to have any noticeable effect. They were also NOT auto-deleted by the device from the NewFiles folder on a reboot so I doubt they are being used in the same way.
I also noticed that one particular setting (High Contrast under the desired Activity) was toggled off and could not be toggled on until the unit was power-cycled again. I really have no idea what this setting actually does as I have noticed NO difference with it on or off. There may be other such settings elsewhere that I'm not aware of.
To summarize:
Be warned that you will still need to reset some settings and be prepared to do a couple of power-cycles to get things back in order. This is NOT a full-fledged backup & restore process but it does help, especially with the restoration of the Home Screens and most things. It's definitely better than nothing. I also noticed that waypoints that are backed/restored in the way DO retain their multic-colored icons, unlike using BaseCamp to transfer waypoints to the unit and having them end up as the "large blue flag" icons.
