Long story short, i still think it should not be a very big change making sure that disabled maps, are disabled and not overlaying any active map.
As I pointed out in post #2 in this thread, that is the responsibility of the map maker. If a third party map does not follow the rules, this i snot a Garmin issue, it is a map maker issue.
For the record, I also prefer OSM maps (like so many do) and use them on all my Garmin units. Fortunately, the OSM maps I use are created my someone that understands the 'rules' involved when making maps for Garmin GPSr, and I do not have the issue you are experiencing.
Map making is very technical process, and what I am trying to tell you is that the issue you are having is a 'map issue', not a 'GPSr issue'.
Garmin uses very strict map ID schema, and if they were to change that, all maps made to date would be instantly 'broken', so this is not an option.
A better option would be to contact those who compile the maps you are having issues with and seeing if you can convince them to make the correction to their 'free' maps, as the issue you are experiencing resides there, not on the GPSr.
