opentopomap for Canada exceeds 4GB

Hello group,

I have been using the maps found here for a while now:
Spoiler
The latest release (2022-04-02) for the Canada map exceeds 4GB in size and cannot be copied over to a 32GB FAT32 formatted micro SD-Card.
I require a FAT32 formatted SD card because I am using an Oregon 600 device from Garmin.

Is there a way to easily split the map, the .img file obtained from garmin.opentopomap.org, in 2 or more parts?

Thanks

Yvan

We are currently downloading the available Canada map from the link provided, which indicates the total file size will only be 3.6 GB.

Which map did you download?

Yes, I have noticed that too, the text says 3.6G, however, once downloaded and unzipped, it's over 4G in size:

Indeed, the unzipped map is too large for FAT32, an oversight by the map author!

We are researching possible solutions now....

I have reported the problem here:

however, I am not sure if that site is monitored.

If you can come up with a possible solution, it would be great.

Thanks

That is exactly what I was going to suggest, as the map author needs to correct the issue regardless.

Thus far, I have only found some software that will disassemble the full map into all of the individual segments it consists of (in this case, 349), which is of little help. Then you could compile smaller maps using combinations of those segments, which is a very tedious process, especially since you would first have to determine which segments bordered each other.

May I suggest you visit GPSrChive > How To... > Maps to find a suitable temporary replacement option.

Why not just use MapSource or BaseCamp to select 2 sections and have them make the 2 parts? If you need all of Canada on the device at the same time, perhaps fill the card with as much as you can and put the remaining bit into the internal memory.

I assume there's a MapSource / BaseCamp installer in your zipped file? Hence the above suggestion. If not, get the installer file from

You could use this one:

canada_gmapsupp.img
Size: 1387 MB
Build: 08.04.2022

found here:

Or you can always use:

GMapTool and cgpsmapper to make an install for any IMG file you have.

I tried using GMapTool and cgpsmapper to split the .img file with the option Create for Mapsource and then I installed it. The result in Basecamp, however, was simply horrible and the map was not useable.

So, for the time being, I will be using the previous version of the map, it was below 4GB. I will switch to another map provider if I feel a need for it.

Thanks for your time.
