What‘s the difference to an inReach Mini 2? Both variants use a smartphone app? The only difference seems the bigger battery for a longer runtime, but a bigger size. Mini 2 sounds like the better deal.

Essentially, the inReach Messenger focuses on inReach communication features only and does not provide any navigation features. No waypoints, no courses, no on device track log. Just inReach messages, weather forecasts, web based tracking, and of course inReach SOS capabilities.
A new Messenger wiki page is under development to illustrate all details and will be live soon.

Yes, it's basically a stripped down inReach Mini 2 with a bigger battery.
Even the Messenger App seems to be planned to be used with GPSMap 66i, Montana 7x0i.
