Speed Up GPSMap 276Cx While Navigating

Unread post by seasdes »

I have a GPSMap 276Cx & really like it for its multi use capabilities.

The only problem that I have is that occasionally while navigating, the position shown on the GPS lags behind my actual position. This problem is really only a problem in places where there are a lot of road intersections & some roundabouts in cities. I have tried turning off various features but the problem remains.

Has anyone found a set of settings to speed up this GPS to overcome this slowness?

Sorry to say, but you need to buy a different device. The 276Cx is painfully slow due its hardware.. Nothing can be done about it. Many people complain about this, when the 276Cx was released.

The closest thing to a 276Cx - without buttons - would be a Montana 7x0. Can do everything like the 276Cx, except having only touch and a different UI.
Garmin DriveSmart 86 MT-D (FW 6.90, HW V8, GPS 9.00.50, 32GB SD)
Garmin Montana 750i (FW 22.70, HW V6, GPS 2.90, Touchscreen 85.07, 64GB SD)

When first released they were painfully slow at times and had all sorts of other issues, but updates have improved this somewhat over time.
This is from my own experiences, other people's may vary.

First thing is to make sure it's updated to the latest firmware.

Then try turning off everything you don't use.
Have only the map you wish to use enabled, disable any others.
The Basemap I never use on any Garmin device, though I've heard that not using it will cause issues, even from Garmin themselves, but I have never seen any issues from not using it and Garmin was unable to explain what those issues might be.

Zooming in a bit on the map screen can help with lags also, zoomed too far out sometimes it struggles to keep up, zooming in it has less to display and less to update each time it updates the display.
If street navigating I mostly have the zoom on mine set to around 80 or 120 metres.

Some of the Settings I have:

Setup > System > WAAS/EGNOS disabled.

Setup > Display:
Highway Page - Off
Battery Save - Off
Screen Capture - Off - this is only on when a user turns it on, after a restart it'll be off again.
Twilight Adjustment - Off
Compass Page - Off
Altimeter Page - Off

Setup > Bluetooth - Off

Setup > WiFi - Off

Setup > Tracks > Record Method - Time, Interval - 0:05

Setup > Altimeter > Auto Calibration - Off

Setup > ANT Sensor - All Off

I only turn on things as I need them, then disable them again once finished.
For me it seems to work ok.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I take it that Autozoom is Off.
Do you find any difference in selecting GPS or GPS +GLONASS?
What level of detail do you use Ie Leas, Normal or Most?
Maps (for urban areas). Do you use Garmin City Navigator or OSM. If using OSM, which provider?
Orientation. Do you use Track Up or Automotive?

No probs 8-)

Yes, Autozoom is off.
I use GPS + Glonass, no noticeable difference selecting just GPS.
Most for detail.
OSM for urban areas (Australia), sourced from OpenMapChest.
Track Up.

On the Map screen Menu > Declutter On.
In theory that should also reduce the resources required to display the map.
I use it occasionally though mostly with offroad navigation, not because of lag but so I can see things on the screen clearly without too many labels etc. being in the way.

EDIT: I read in the 276CX manual somewhere that having map detail set to most and map speed set to Fast could cause the device to lag at times.
I thought when I read it it sounded like Garmin knew there was performance issues with these devices.
I haven't noticed any lag problems for a while now, it used to occasionally when I first got it but I had the impression that with firmware upgrades they had fixed the issue.

Thanks.
Looks like we have similar setups and maps.
The significant differences are:
I had Autozoom on.
I had Automotive orientation.
I had GPS only.
I wish that I could have Declutter On permanently. I usually forget to use this setting.

I will try the following settings:
Autozoom. Off. Set zoom to 50 - 80 metres.
Orienttion. Track up.
GPS only.
Declutter. On (if I can remember).
Detail. Normal for now.
WAAS/EGNOS. Off.
Highway page. Off.
Battery save. Off
Screen capture. Off.
Twilight adjustment. Off.
Compass page. Off.
Altimeter Auto calibration. Off.
Bluetooth. Off.
WiFi. Off.
Track recording. Off.
Ant sensor. All off

I will see how these settings work.

I appreciate your help.

After testing the above settings, I have found that setting the zoom level to 80 metres works fine for me with no lag.
Thanks LostAgain.
