Garmin Nuvi 3597 tracks

Hello all,
My dad recently purchased an old Suzuki Samurai 4x4 that came with a Garmin nuvi 3597.
Since I use it from time to time, I decided to fiddle around in order to try to use it a bit offroad, to explore the surroundings.
My will was to follow some gpx from wikiloc (like this one for example).

I just saw this video on how to transfer gpx to the device, but just noticed that the 3597 doesn't have the tracks app...

Converted the gpx to trip with basecamp, send it using the same method, and I can now see it. But when I tried to run it, it recalculated and didn't match the original one.

1)Is there any way to avoid this?
2)I have been fiddling with maps, is there any maps that are more suitable than others for 4x4?

One of the conditions is that the map must have roads with automatic routing, along which the track runs.
The receiver should have an algorithm for routing off-road.

For Garmin nuvi 3597, you can create a transparent map based on the track, on which the course of the track will be marked without navigation instructions.

We also have a 3597 in our inventory, but it barely gets touched as we found it was very limited for our needs. Great for on highway navigation in a city you aren't familiar with. They way they operate is similar, but not the same as outdoor navigation products. You can load an unlimited number of POI for other activities, if desired. Never really played with maps other than the CNNA it came with.

Did you have Off-Route Recalculation disabled as specified in the video?

Maybe just send the GPX from BaseCamp to the Nuvi, then convert to a Trip on the device itself (like in the video)?

nüvi models don't have that option.

Thank you, Javawa! This probably explains the reported behavior!

When loading a route every Garmin device will recalculate it in some way, except when they are set to direct routing. Some will do it in a clever way so you won't notice any difference, on some it will result in a disaster (looking like a spider web) when de map that was used to create it in BaseCamp/MapSource is not the same as on your device or in a completely different route when the map on the device doesn't contain all needed roads.
Certain devices can create a route based on a track (like the motorcycle models; also the Edge models are very good in that), other models will show just the track (outdoor models) or just ignore it altogether (car models).
The option to disable recalculation in certain models will not do anything on the moment that you are loading a route, but it will keep your route intact when you diverge from it on your way.

FYI - just pulled our 3597 out of mothballs to get familiar with it again and watched while Garmin REMOVED device features via bluetooth connection without user permission!

It appears the 'photoLive' Traffic CAM feature, which was one of the reasons we did purchase this device originally, has been removed.

Thank you, Garmin! (not really)

:x

Hello,
I don't have that option like in the video.

Thanks for the insights. It makes things much more clear for me.
I will test again with a free OSM Map (Frikart) installed in basecamp and the same on the device and report. I don't intend to make it a 100% offroad device, mostly because possibly impossible and because for sure offroad devices have more complexities to allow to do it.

I was surprised to see the device could re-route "offroad" (this while using TopoActive Power Sports- which I though were like a transparent map to use with CN, but in the end you can use it alone), although the routing was not always 100% ok for car.

There are three route planning preferences to choose from in the device,
"Shorter time" in most cases does not take into account lower category roads,
you can try to plan a route according to the criterion, "Shortest" or "Lowest fuel consumption".

With the criterion "Lowest fuel consumption "the algorithm prefers roads with lower speeds.
