Update TopoActive Europe to internal memory

Unread post by mity! »

I own a O750t (t = with pre-installed Topo Active) which receives the yearly updates to the Topo Active Europe map.

Because I also use a (quite old) Garmin Topo Map Germany which is dongled to its 8GB SD card, I install the Topo Active on the device's internal memory. Since some years the map is too big for the internal memory but it was possible to choose with Garmin Express a region (west, central, east) of the map so that it fits to the available memory.

With the recent version of the map (2024.10) or the last update of Garmn Express (7.23?) I was not able to choose the region anymore and to install the map to the internal memory.

But after I installed the map with a separate SD card inserted to the device, I noticed that there were three maps installed on the device: one IMG-file in the internal memory and two IMG-files on the SD card (all with about 3GB). And actually the files contain again the three regions west, central and east and work of course separately.

You simply have to copy the corresponding files of the region you need to the internal memory (after deleting the "wrong" region). And of course you should keep a backup of all the corresponding map files...

If the device has maps installed, there is no need to reinstall them, I used the "Manage maps" option, selected the area and I have map files with the current date on the device (Gpsmap 67).

Whether the Manage maps option in Oregon 750 worked similarly, you have to check yourself, Garmin Express is individualized for individual receivers.

Apparently, in Gpsmap 66sr you can update areas of individual countries.

Garmin have been really messing around with the way maps are installed both on device (via the Map Manager functionality that is on Edge x40/1050, recent smartwatches, Montana 7xx, GPSMAP 67) and via Garmin Express. They changed the way regions are installed, for example for Europe you previously selected Europe and then via a dropdown you could select what region you wanted. Now the regions are listed as separate entries at least for the recent devices I have (Edge 1040 and GPSMAP 67).

It took multiple updates for Express to iron out most of the issues over the various devices. But I wouldn't be surprised if some of the older devices got left behind with these updates...

When and where did you purchase your Oregon 750t?

US models were preloaded with standard TOPO 100k maps.

I think this is not supported by the Oregon 7x0t. The only way I know to get updates of the Topo Active from Garmin is via 'Garmin Express'...

And it was (formerly...) also the only "regular" way (without copying files to the unit's file system of your own) to "switch" between the regions. Actually in these cases the chosen region was freshly downloaded and the last IMG-file on the device was overwritten.

Oh, that was maaaany years ago. Probably 2016 when the device was released. I bought it in Germany and I'm quite sure that all devices (of the "model t" ;) ) for the european market had the preinstalled Topo Active Europe.

The option manage maps for Gpsmap 67 that I wrote about applies to Germin Express.

If I manually remove one of the regions from the device, it will not be possible to update this region.
The map file of the region to be updated must be on the device.

As far as I am aware for my etrex 30/30x, garmin express always worked this way when the topoactive maps get bigger than the internal memory.
I always had to delete the ones I don't need. In the past topoactive europe were two maps files and now three.
I use Javawa device manager to see which file has which coverage and to delete it.

Just tested our Oregon 750t and 700 with current version of Garmin Express and the Map Manager is not available for these devices.
