Interesting bug (I assume) with course points and how they are displayed when navigating a course with them.

Scenario:

• create a course in Explore app (I used 4.0.4 on iOS) with several course points (mine had around 30)
• edit the course points in the app and give them a name and icon. I used different icons for the first 15 or so course points and did not modify the other course points
• sync the course with the GPSMAP 67
• preview the course either via the Course Planner or via Find > Courses
• in the preview you will see that the course points and selected icons match with what has been specified in Explore app
• now start navigating the course in Direct Path mode (so that the GPSMAP 67 does not calculate the course)
• observe that several icons are duplicated and shown in the wrong location (eg ancient building, fish, house, picnic table), it seems earlier on the course than where the actual course point is
• observe that the Active Route page shows the course points in the correct order with the correct icons

Of course using so many different course points may not be a realistic use case but I would still expect the points to match what I defined in the course itself.

Anyone else seeing this as well?

Also interesting to see, for those who are familiar with the technical details of FIT course files, is that apparently the type of course points that have an icon assigned in Explore is always set to generic (value 0) and that an undocumented field is used to store a number indicating the icon used. Course points that have not been modified have type 26, which is also undocumented but stand for shaping point.

Firmware v8.90?

Well, kind of on 8.90. After updating I have the strange issue where the about screen shows "Software Version 8.90" and "Host Software Version 8.80". GarminDevice.xml also shows 8.80 as software version. Garmin Express doesn't offer any updates. Not sure if the course point is related to this.

What happens if you download the 890 update from the firmware page and install manually?

I did a binary diff between the file that Express downloaded (and used to install the update) and the file on GPSrChive, but no difference. I also copied the GPSrChive file to my GPSMAP (and renamed it), but it doesn't get detected as an update. I even did the Restore SW option from the diagnostics menu (accessed from the trip computer), but no luck either.

In the thread Crash when Loading A Route [Crash 3] someone else mentioned the same issue, btw.

If Garmin were still using GCD updates, we could extract the RGN and do a forced update, but not in this case.

I hope they are able to get this resolved for you soon, please let us know what happens next!

Yeah hope so too, it will probably get resolved but not so sure about "soon" I'll keep you posted.

Hi Jim, I will let you know if I hear back from Garmin, I tried everything you did as well as a hard button reset but still shows host firmware 8.80 and will not update from either Garmin express or Garmin explore app option to check for updates.

Have you heard back from Garmin yet?

I believe they have a special procedure for you to follow to complete the device update.

Unfortunately no solution yet. I’ve provided some additional info and Garmin Express logs, but haven’t heard back since last Friday…
