switching profiles suddenly takes several minutes
I was part-way into our current holiday and suddenly, switching profiles takes several minutes (instead of virtuously instantaneously). When it first happened, I thought the unit had locked-up and gave it a hard reset with a looong push on the on/off button. I eventually realised that it did switch, but takes several minutes.
I used to switch profiles regularly, eg when switching between driving and walking modes.
Anyone else have this experience?
I created a new profile and it switched to it instantly. I then created a 2nd new profile and it switched to that instantly. But switching between the 2 new profiles still takes minues.
I am embarking on taking screenshots of how all the pages are setup in each profile, then will overwrite the files in the garmin/profiles folder with backups I took a while back. If that doesn't fix it, I guess I'll delete everything in the folder and try starting from scratch.

Re: switching profiles suddenly takes several minutes
Update: I connected to the gpsr in USB mode and deleted all the profiles from the Profiles folder. It won't delete the one that was active. I turned the unit on and created a new profile, then tried to switch back to the old one that was active at the time I deleted the rest - and it took a couple of minutes. Same when switching back to the new profile.
I connected in USB mode agan, and deleted the last of the old profiles (as it wasn't active this time), and then turned the unit on again and created another new profile.
So now I have 2 newly-created profiles - and it still takes a couple of minutes to switch.
At a loss of what to do next.

I am assuming a 66i, what firmware version?
How much available memory on the device and or micro SD card (if installed)?

I don't think you've performed a hard reset.steerage250 wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 12:31 am When it first happened, I thought the unit had locked-up and gave it a hard reset with a looong push on the on/off button.
How to perform a hard reset on your GPSmap 66i:
Press and hold the PAGE and ENTER buttons simultaneously.
Press the power button to turn on the device while holding the PAGE and ENTER buttons simultaneously.
Release the power button only when Garmin appears on the screen.
Release the PAGE and ENTER buttons when the message "Are you sure you want to delete all user data?" appears.
This will delete all saved user data.

Yes, a 66i, with software version 10.2, GPS software version 2.90. I have 11GB free in the GPSr's memory and 19GB free on the SD card.

Yes, I meant "hard reset" - not a "factory reset" (regardless of the proper terminology). A factory reset means lots of work to set it all up again, so I'm looking for better solutions obviously. I have backed-up the contents of various folders (eg Profiles)Przekątny wrote: Thu Aug 28, 2025 9:32 amI don't think you've performed a hard reset.steerage250 wrote: Wed Aug 27, 2025 12:31 am When it first happened, I thought the unit had locked-up and gave it a hard reset with a looong push on the on/off button.

It's not about terminology, but about the procedure. If something isn't working properly on the device,steerage250 wrote: Sun Sep 14, 2025 3:50 am Yes, I meant "hard reset" - not a "factory reset" (regardless of the proper terminology). it should be reset to its factory default settings, which should ensure proper operation.
Pressing the on/off button for a long time on outdoor (tourist) devices doesn't initiate any repair procedure.
If you were to perform a reset and copy the archived profile files to the device, there's a good chance the device would regain its functionality.

Yes, I think I'm at the point where I have to "bite the bullet" and do just that. (and cross my fingers)Przekątny wrote: Sun Sep 14, 2025 9:22 am If you were to perform a reset and copy the archived profile files to the device, there's a good chance the device would regain its functionality.

Frequently, this works out well, but sometimes it is the Profile configuration files that have been corrupted and you do have to literally start over from scratch. Those are long miserable dayssteerage250 wrote: Sun Sep 14, 2025 11:04 amYes, I think I'm at the point where I have to "bite the bullet" and do just that.
