The combination of v5.09 & v6.04...

Unread post by WallyGator »

The combination of v5.09 & v6.04 (as well as the others) and the number of fixes and missing features added is actually quite startling and shows how inadequate the shipping firmware on the unit is. I didn't count the actual number of changes in the combined changelogs but it's an impressively long list. The unit (eTrex Touch 2 in my case) is finally starting to shape up pretty nicely. Hopefully, we will get another firmware update before the end of Jan 2026 so I can judge whether or not to keep my unit (my return widow closes on Jan 31, 2026).

You should have seen the ungodly amount of fixes that were pushed out by Garmin after the Fenix 8 released, see the change log history to get a taste.

It seems Garmin has learned nothing at all from that release. And the H1 and eTrex Touch have the disadvantage that they don't sell as well as the Fenix 8 line, so Garmin will probably invest less in the outdoor handheld range than in outdoor watches.

Let's hope Garmin continues pushing out fixes and improvements for the H1 / H1i Plus and eTrex Touch. The ascent planner feature would be nice.

For those who are relatively new to Garmin Outdoor Handheld products, please understand, this is SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).

One need look no further than the firmware history for the Montana 6x0 series to get a good idea of how this works. Firmware history for the Montana 7x0 as well as the Oregon 6x0 and Oregon 7x0 series reveal similar patterns, as will the GPSMAP 66, 66i, and 66sr.

Many of these models are still receiving updates more than 5 years into their product life cycle, with initial updates being more frequent and having longer change logs than later updates. Most are continually developed and transformed during the first two years of updates into a product that is superior to their initial offering, with multiple and less frequent maintenance updates following.

The 'Common Issues' pages for each of those (and others) will also reveal that most (but not all) issues are resolved during that time.

And while many of you may find this unappealing and/or unsatisfactory, let me assure you, after sales support from the competition, when there was any (Magellan, DeLorme, Lowrance, etc) was actually far worse, and a big part of why none of them are still around.

There’s no firmware update for my device yet. When I plug it into Garmin Express, it says version 5.09 is up to date. So for now, I don't know if the bugs I reported have been fixed or not

It may take a couple of days before you get the update, Garmin releases updates in stages so not everyone gets it at the same time.
