You can see the actual battery voltage in the Diagnostic Screen, but not charge percentage.

It is my understanding that calculating the actual charge percentage of NiMH batteries is not an exact science, unlike the Li-ion battery in your phone, which is.

But with a montana, it is possible to see the % battery
(Doubleclick of powerbutton on Montana)

Probably only when the Li-Ion battery is installed in the Montana.

I do not need to hold 2 buttons

Unit is off
Press ENTER and hold the button
Press POWER for a short time

Remain holding ENTER

Select OLD TEST MODE

I have 2,63 Vbat with fresh black eneloop

But you can also take LADDA from IKEA
Seems to be the same but cheaper version

That’s only possible for a device with an internal, or smart battery pack.

If the batteries in a Garmin are sitting right at the nominal 3 Volts between them,
how is it supposed to know if it has dirty old carbon batteries from the 80’s with ten minutes left in them?

You tell the Garmin the type of battery you put in it, it reads the voltage, and plots that on a typical discharge curve
for the type of battery, to find a relative position to display on a meter.

For Garmin’s own battery pack, which doesn’t have any smarts, the Garmin couldn’t even tell the difference between two battery packs,
only that they are of a type that begins at a lower voltage, and has a different discharge curve than alkalines.

For laptop battery pass, or even batteries in a phone, the device can look at previous discharge cycles, and it’s a new ball game.
