Re: inactive maps overlay and blank out active maps
As I pointed out in post #2 in this thread, that is the responsibility of the map maker. If a third party map does not follow the rules, this i snot a Garmin issue, it is a map maker issue.
For the record, I also prefer OSM maps (like so many do) and use them on all my Garmin units. Fortunately, the OSM maps I use are created my someone that understands the 'rules' involved when making maps for Garmin GPSr, and I do not have the issue you are experiencing.
Map making is very technical process, and what I am trying to tell you is that the issue you are having is a 'map issue', not a 'GPSr issue'.
Garmin uses very strict map ID schema, and if they were to change that, all maps made to date would be instantly 'broken', so this is not an option.
A better option would be to contact those who compile the maps you are having issues with and seeing if you can convince them to make the correction to their 'free' maps, as the issue you are experiencing resides there, not on the GPSr.

987, please download and install JaVaWa Device Manager and then connect your 'problematic' GPSr and run the program, then post a screenshot of the Map errors or issues it reports please.

Re: inactive maps overlay and blank out active maps
When connecting JaVa device manager, with those maps from garmin.openstreetmap.nl, it does show an error saying that that map tiles with the same number exist in more than one file. Even if i downloaded pre-generated countries, say Germany and Denmark, the border areas which have the same tiles may blank out when on of the maps is disables, and if i have those countries loaded JaVa device manager two shows the error message.
The overlay problem does not occur with maps from http://garmin.opentopomap.org, and from what i could see nor with maps from http://www.freizeitkarte-osm.de. These maps use separate numbers for each map file even it originated from the same area.
I still think that if a map is disabled, is should not blank our areas even if the same tiles are share with some active map, but i understand much better how it works and what i can do about it to manage anyway.
Thank you all who have answered, it has helped and i am very thankful!
