Thank you for your patience with me on this. I hadn't realised that tracks and routes are both gpx files hence my confusion.
Just out of curiosity, is there a reason why the Edge 800 can provide turn by turn info with a track while the Gpsmap66 won't?

Re: Beginner problem
We do not have an edge for in person testing, and we are unaware of how the edge could give turn by turn direction with a track. If this were possible, we wouldn't need routes. Tracks do not work the same as routes, and only routes can be used for guided turn by turn navigation. All Garmin GPSr have been this way for 30+ years.

Not quite true. I took my Geko 301 as well as my GPSMAP 66s out on yesterday's hike, mainly so I could compare the recorded tracklog accuracy. Both had the same gpx track loaded (definitely not a route). I set each unit to follow the track. The Geko displayed a "Turn Ahead" dialog just before major changes of direction.

Re: Beginner problem
My GRouteLoader IQ app will now let you download "route" files from Ridewithgps (RWGPS).
Just use the following in the RWGPSOptions in the app settings.
gpxroute=true

I use "WinGDB3" tool both for Win and Mac
https://www.sackman.javawa.nl/download_en.html
Does a convert of a track to a route very fast.

Re: Beginner problem
You can upload it as a course via Garmin Connect mobile app - I think that this is the preferred way. You can use browser: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/courses (training > courses) and then import (bottom left corner).
You can upload a route via garmin explorer ( https://explore.garmin.com/ select Map in the top bar and then import (from right top corner) and then Import as route. The actual sync is via mobile app (garmin connect or garmin explorer), probably there is a desktop application (BaseCamp?) but it is only for Windows/Mac.

If you want to have turn by turn navigation of a route (uploaded to explore.garmin.com) - you should have not more than 50 points. You can simplify a track using:
gpsbabel -i gpx -f *.gpx -x simplify,count=50 -o gpx -F target-50.gpx
(if you have gpsbabel - https://www.gpsbabel.org/download.html )
or you can do it online using
https://www.gpsvisualizer.com/convert_input
check Advanced options > Max. points per track
but as I previously mentioned - Courses are now the way to go with GpsMap 66s (You should have the latest firmware version installed)
