GPSMAP 66 Firmware Update 5.00 released 05NOV20:

Changes made from version 4.80 to 5.00:

• Fixed issue causing some software updates to fail.

• Improved the process of deleting .ggz files.

• Fixed issue with geocache proximity alarm slowing down start up times.

• Fixed possible shutdown on photo viewer with lots of photos.

• Fixed potential flashing of main menu on top of different apps.

• Fixed issue that could occur when clearing geocaching live data while navigating to a geocache.

Install via Garmin Express, WebUpdater, or direct download.

If we have the 5.0 beta is there any reason to do anything or are they the same?

They are one and the same.

If they had made any additional changes, they would have increased the firmware number.

Update to 5.00 when very quick with Webupdater.
One thing that was strange was when I started Garmin Express and attached the 66s to my Laptop before I tried Webupdater it told me I had the latest firmware 5.00 but nothing was installed or could I.
I removed the 66s from the laptop to check and I still had 4.80 as the latest version.

That is when I closed Garmin Express and reattached the 66s to the Laptop and started Webupdater.
It download 5.00 and installed it.
After that I restated the 66s and it did the update with no problems at all.
Do not know why Garmin Express v 7.1.4.0 was telling me I was up to date with v5.00 when I was not.

Will test today it all is working the way it should.......

I've had that same exact issue with Garmin Express several times on multiple devices.

No idea why.

WebUpdater or Manual GCD Installation always prevails!

Thought I should just confirm that finally with this version all seems to be working for me. I have a 5,000 GGZ file on the SD card and the startup is normal. Best of all geocache proximity alarms are working!

Unfortunately the main menu keeps flashing over other menus. Seems to be worse in 5.00 than with 4.80.
Observed while opening menu - recorded activities, saved tracks, route planner and sometimes if opening the search menu.

I think I am understanding your description of what is happening. I just followed steps on both of our 66st units and all worked normally. No flashing or view of main menu, or anything other than the expected screen. So as long as I am reproducing your steps accurately, our two devices don't do it.

Please post (or email to webmaster at GPSrChive dot com) a short video showing device firmware version and menu flashing for submission to Garmin software engineers.

i downgraded to 4.80, on which the device made a reset
after that i upgraded to 5.00 and no more issues with flashing screen. one step forward.
