Wallpaper
Like the Montana before it, the Garmin Oregon 6xx employs an intelligent wallpaper feature, switching between “night mode” and "day mode" automatically so your eyes stay focused during sunrise and sunset. The Oregon 6xx also changes screen orientation between "portrait mode" and "landscape mode" based on how you are using the device.
The Oregon 6xx comes pre-loaded with several wallpaper designs provided by Garmin, but you may find it rewarding and advantageous to create and install your own custom wallpaper designs. For example, you may wish to create and use specific wallpaper designs to help you differentiate which profiles are currently active with just a quick glance at the screen.
To take full advantage of the Oregon 6xx advanced wallpaper features, a few simple guidelines must be adhered to:
Wallpaper Dimensions
The Oregon 6xx display operates in two orientations:
In Portrait the screen resolution is 240x400 pixels
In Landscape the screen resolution is 400x240 pixels
Wallpaper Design
The Oregon 6xx Main Menu screen is where you access applications and shortcuts enabled within an active profile. Each Main Menu screen can be configured to display four, nine, or sixteen application or shortcut icons. The number of icons you have enabled within a specific profile may influence the wallpaper design for that profile.
To assist in designing your own custom wallpaper, download the zipped archive of transparent Oregon 6xx wallpaper templates. Transparent overlays are included for 4, 9, and 16 icon screens in Portrait, Landscape Left, and Landscape Right modes.
If you don't already have a favorite image editing software installed, or even if you do, I highly recommend using Paint.net
Wallpaper Designation
The Oregon 6xx will automatically change wallpaper at sunset and sunrise to help prevent excessive contrast with the environment and thereby reduce eye fatigue, provided the nighttime and daytime wallpaper images are designed to do so.
Each wallpaper set will require four JPEG images to be fully functional within an active profile.
- Daytime Portrait Image (Bright) (240x400)
-
Nighttime Portrait Image (Dark) (240x400)
-
Daytime Landscape Image (Bright) (400x240)
-
Nighttime Landscape Image (Dark) (400x240)
Each JPEG image must be properly named before the Oregon 6xx will recognize it as part of a wallpaper set. A valid wallpaper name may contain only letters and numbers, without any spaces or symbols. Once you have decided on a name for the wallpaper set you have created, name each JPEG (*.jpg) image as shown below, replacing {name} with your chosen designation.
- Daytime Portrait Image = {name}_portrait_day.jpg
-
Nighttime Portrait Image = {name}_portrait_night.jpg
-
Daytime Landscape Image = {name}_landscape_day.jpg
-
Nighttime Landscape Image = {name}_landscape_night.jpg
Wallpaper Installation
This is the easy part! Simply copy your newly created wallpaper images to the [Oregon 6xx]\Garmin\Profiles\ directory on your GPSr. These images must be stored on the Oregon 6xx, and not on the µSD card. Restart the Oregon 6xx, and your new wallpaper should be available in [Setup > Appearance > Background].
