Open Street BBBike Map "layer" Visibility

Unread post by NeilP »

I am so new to this I do not know if this is a "GPS unit" question, a "download type" question or a map layer setting question, or what. So I have asked this in "General Discussion" sub forum. (Moved to OSM Maps)

This relates to my trials with an Oregon 300 and BBBike downloaded OSM maps.

In my reading so far I have seen talk of when there are overlapping tiles you may get an error but I have seen no errors.

I am currently playing with small 3-4 mb maps of my local area ( Jersey, Channel Islands ) downloaded from BBBike. Small maps so I can easily load them all and jump between maps.

I want to see which download type I prefer.

I see the Oregon "Map Select" menu item allows for more than one map type to be enabled.

So, to my question now I have explained the situation.

On viewing the maps on the Oregon I cannot work out if you have six maps ENABLED, are all six are overlaid, or if only one is displayed.
If just one displayed what the priority of display is.

I am just creating 10 different profiles with each map Enabled singularly as, so i can quickly swap maps. I read that as a hint here before ..much quicker than navigating the menu system to swap maps.

So if any one can enlighten me as to how the map visibility works, and if it is Unit based, map based or ? I may yet discover the myself today as I get these profiles setup.

The download styles I am experimenting with to see which I favour are:
Garmin STRM Contour 40 meter
BBBike
Cycle
Leisure
Onroad
Ontario
OpenFiets Full
OpenFiets Lite
OpenTopo
OSM

Thankyou for taking the time to help

All enabled maps are displayed so long as the total allowable map segment limit for the device has not been exceeded. (4k on your Oregon 300)

Map visibility is primarily map based as each map has a pre-assigned 'Draw Order' to determine which maps appear above or below other maps.

Do make sure you choose the 'Latin1' versions from BBBike and not the 'UTF-8' to ensure they display properly on your device!

Thanks, yes, got the Latin ones.

I had all of those map styles each on an individual profile yesterday, and yes could see they do sometimes overlay, but could not work out any real logic to it.
From what you say I can now see why.. Thank you.

The 40 meter contours on the STRM map are not a lot of use, ‘Leisure’ I think has better, closer spaced ones.

Guess it is going to be a matter of switching and flicking them on/ off by trial and error.

Thank you.
