GPSMAP 67 crashes daily

Unread post by Offpiste »

From 1 minute hangs during map downloading to complete reboots!
What ever is going on, this is the bugiest device I've ever used.

Sometimes I'm just looking around cities and hovering the arrow over shops and it will reboot.

Hope they get it sorted soon.

Firmware Version? Host version?

Have you performed a master reset yet?

The hang during map downloads, when does that occur exactly? Because I noticed that when a map download completes, the GPSMAP will scan the download map file. And depending on map file size, this can take up to a couple of minutes, during which it seems the device hangs because you get no feedback at all. It's basically the same as what happens when you turn on the GPSMAP with new map files on the internal storage or an SD card.

As for reboots, if you're not on the latest firmware version (8.90 as of this moment), it helps to report these to Garmin Support. Based on my experience Garmin is actually keen on resolving device reboot issues, as those are resolved more frequently and sooner than other issues,

Just turn off the WiFi if you don't need it. It froze for me too because it was downloading a new firmware in the background via WiFi.

I always have wifi turned off because I rarely need it, and i have no problems with crash or freezing.

Software 8.90
host version 8.90
gps Software version 11.02
Wireless 28.02

I can replicate an auto boot as I've managed it 3 times in a row.

On the map screen I press find then scroll down to "all pois"
Then I press menu and select "spell search"
Then typed "Linford" in the box and selected done.
Linford stag turns up as the only result and with the purple ring still turning.
While it's still turning I press enter an get an auto reboot.

When it restarts it the blue bar runs across the bottom quite a few times, I have lots of the topoactiv maps downloaded. Unlike the normal quick boot.

If I type the correct spelling of Lynford then I get 3 in the list, I can select the top one "lynford folly" while the purple ring is turning an it jumps correctly straight to the map with "go" as the option.

I'll add more as I find them, I've removed the WiFi access point from the 67 so hopefully it will stay off and stop wasting battery life. I did a master reset after the firmware update and updated maps and downloaded more.

Hopefully they fix these bugs, the device can also freeze with the screen off, it remembers all button presses as when it comes back it does them all. This is mostly in the map manager.

When it's doing what I ask it it's fine and solid as a rock, it's just selecting random things in the menus that crash it.
Also feels limited to 6ft accuracy which it finds quite quickly I was just expecting a smaller number as my really old etrex vista can manage 5foot in clear view of the skies.

I'm on day 14 now so I can't return it so it's here for a while. I nearly bought a 66 or a 64 but went for the latest to spec gps. It's a long way from my old garmin gps12 but even that is solid as a rock and never failed in over 20 years.

Come on garmin, you now have my money, invest in some more developers and make the 67 as trustworthy as the gps12.

If you can reproduce it consistently then definitely report it to Garmin Support if you haven't done so already.

What exactly do you mean with "lots of the topoactiv maps downloaded"? As in many regions? Or do you also have other maps on the device, like Outdoor Maps+ or 3rd party maps?

And does the crash also happen if you have a single TopoActive map region installed and no other maps?

I've only downloaded maps via the device, I downloaded africa, usa, Japan etc. I've no third party or outdoor maps installed.

Do the above steps reboot anyone else's 67?
Also it did crash the same before I added the sd card and downloaded the extra before I really took notice of what caused it.

I also find the topoActive layer turns off when I search about the map in Scotland. Also if I'm looking about the map and decide to download the satellite image when I select the "download maps here" it returns to the map in a different location so I have to zoom out and find the location again.

Each new map download does automatically reboot the device to index the new map.

I haven't seen this personally. Last time I downloaded maps via the Map Manager, there would be a message that the downloaded map is being processed (don't remember the exact wording), which takes a while without any feedback if the map file is large. When that completes the map is available to use. Maybe the behaviour has changed between firmware updates.
