Maps reducing in size.

Unread post by Offpiste »

Last night I was walking down memory lane and decided to find some of my favorite places in Germany.
The entire of Germany was missing as per attachment.

At 20 miles zoom I get the next map -> see attachment. I couldn't get it back anyway I tried.
I looked in map manager and all map file sizes looked different, Europe was only 2gig! X I deleted it and I had the basemap back -> see attachment - then I had hamburg back with no detail or roads or poi.
Downloaded Europe again and it was 10gig!

What maps do you have installed and what layers are active? Do you have Outdoor Maps+?

But based on all the other issues you’re having I wouldn’t be surprised if your device is defective. Contact the seller you bought the unit from or contact Garmin support to get a replacement.

I Have just the topoactive maps downloaded, I just have satellite view layer turned off. I don't subscribe to outdoor+.

I think if I can jump ship and get a refund I will, not sure I'd want another 67 if they offer it. Is there any other alternatives that are worth the effort researching?

Thanks for the advice @JungleJim

Well, I not having any of the mapping issues you describe on my unit so I would definitely give a replacement unit a chance.

As for alternatives it really depends on what you’re looking for in a GP unit…

TopoActive Europe is > 10 GB, so when the device indicated only 2 GB map size it is clear the download had been interrupted.

These same maps can also be installed using Garmin Express.

I was searching and making way points in Germany last week, the Europe map was complete and wasn't a interrupted download, I'm on a very reliable fibre service isp.
It just disappeared.

Edit- the 10+gig Europe map now shows its size as 9.11gb, where is the other gig gone?
Topo Japan says 693mb, Australia & NZ is 1.02gb, Antarctica is 213mb, North America was a 10g download an now its 7.18gb, South America is 3.30gb, Hong Kong is now 16mb, Africa is 4.66gb, Middle East is 1.46gb, Singapore/Malaysia/veitnam/Philippines is 749mb.
I'm sure a few more were larger when downloaded.

Are these maps loaded to internal memory or microSD card?

TopoActive Europe shows as 9.11GB on my device as well so that is the normal size.

But the unit has 16GB internal storage, some of which is used by system files. So I'm assuming you do not have all the other maps you mentioned installed right? Without using an SD card it's not possible to have both North America and Europe TopoActive maps on the device. Or are you listing the sizes that are displayed by Map Manager when adding new TopoActive maps to the device?

For the first week they were on the device, when I accidentally disabled them in map manager and then the toggles to re-enable then disappeared then I downloaded the maps to a brand new 32gb card which I bought specifically for this device.

It had a fresh format and within 24 hours I had to do factory reset after it updated from version 5.30* to the latest.
It looked like the update downloaded via WiFi but my phone still managed to shove 2 updates to it (without changing the version in about)

I don't have a computer to use "garmin express"
I already have 4 garmin apps for this device already installed on my phone....... connect, connect iq, wikiloc and explore.

If it can't download maps reliably it should be marked as a bug. Pound for pound the worst electronic device I've ever come across in 45 years....

I wouldn't wish a gpsmap 67 on my worst enemy.
So my routes, my way points, my geocaches, my recorded activities, my tracks and my profiles spent time on are about to flushed
Fantastic.

I had Europe and the other small ones like Japan on the internal memory first thing as soon as it could download a map.
I have all the maps listed downloaded on the installed 32gig card, if it would take a 64gig or a 128gig I would have fitted that but we are stuck at 32gb max capacity for some archaic reason.

So without a card you couldn't have USA and Europe downloaded on the device at the same time! Wow. Just had to pinch myself and check the calender to check we are in 2024.
