Unable to use third party or Garmin Maps [Bugs 34, 38]

Unread post by MikeD »

I have uploaded 5.09 onto my H1
The most pleasing addition in this upgrade is the ability to lock the screen through the activity button with a single touch.
However,
I return to The problem which is a serious one of using third-party apps from an SD card.
I have 10 maps loaded on an SD card, mostly OSM maps including talkytoaster TT 50 – UK
The unit in Map manager sees these maps on the SD card but as previously reported the toggle button is not there to turn maps on and off.
I also have Garmin‘s own maps on SD cards OSGB Discover map for UK and a Garmin topo Map for France.
So I have done some testing On the H1 , My trusty 67 and an Oregon 750 T

Oregon 750 T
Garmin TOPO France -Works okay
Garmin OSGB discover. - Works okay

Map 67
Garmin topo France Works okay
Garmin OSGB Discover. Message on the screen “cannot authenticate maps – contact Map content “

H1
Garmin topo – France. Map not recognised at all
Garmin OSGB discover Same message as above “cannot authenticate….“

When I put my OSM maps, including talkytoaster in the H1 The maps appear in the map manager, there is no toggle button and pressing on the map itself. All the relevant meta data appears.

So as I see it, the H1 is not now even reading Garmin’s own maps apart from all the other ones that we use

What to do now? Do I report this directly to Garmin Support?
Should the seriousness of this situation mean that we ought to have a separate topic in this forum?
Garmin have shot themselves in the foot by not being able to read their own maps.

I think I will report this to Garmin later, but any comments or similar or different experiences would be gratefully received

I would definitely report this to Garmin support. The more people do, the more likely Garmin will fix it.

Has anyone tried to add and use a custom map with the H1 or H1i Plus?

Yes, and they do not work properly (see bugs 36, 37), but this thread is not for that subject. There are existing threads for CustomMaps (KMZ) issues, please post there, or start a new thread!

I emailed Garmin‘s product Support on the lines of my original post.
An hour later I received the following reply.
Garmin Support wrote:“Thank you for reaching out to Garmin Product Support and thank you for that detailed information about the issue.  We have been made aware of this and a work ticket has been created for our engineers to resolve this. Hopefully they will resolve the issue quickly.

I will reach back out once I hear that this issue is resolved.

Thank you for choosing Garmin,”
We will see

Further twists to this vexatious tale

Prior to upgrading to 5.09 I am sure I had two choices of Garmin Map to look at here in the UK.
One was Topo Active and the other street view. The latter gave a high definition image including houses and buildings.
If I now have no SD card in the device, the only choice is Topo. I do not get street view.
If I insert my SD card in the device with My OSM and talkytoaster maps in, I get Street view back.
But
Toggling onto street view brings up the talkytoaster map (OSM based).map!
If I toggle back to Topo I get the previous Map.
So
it does the same in an area in France I know well where toggling between the two brings up the more detailed OSM Map
So we have gained the ability to somehow look at a map installed on the SD card at the expense of losing the inbuilt/delivered street view Map from Garmin.
What is going on? I will report this further to Garmin.
I attach two screenshots to demonstrate. This is an area in the UK6 miles to the east of Kings Lynn Sandringham one of the homes of King Charles III of the UK.

Bugs 35 and 38 seem to be fixed in 6.04.

Although the toggle for additional maps in Map Manager is still gone (bug 34, but I don't think this is a bug anymore, Garmin just changed the way additional maps work), maps now show up as separate layers in the Map Layers menu. Previously they showed up as a single CityNavigator map type.

The garbled screen when selecting a map from the Map Manager screen (bug 35) also seems to be fixed.
