Could be new Montana devices coming?

Unread post by ConiKost »

The AB Balistics App has been updated yesterday and talks about adding support for new Montana devices. But the previous changelog already mentions Montana 700 series, so I do wonder, if new Montana devices are coming?

Excellent catch and very interesting observation....

It has been 4 years since the 7x0 was announced, so perhaps a slightly improved version with USB-C and Multi-Band is due?

What else could be improved?

Thought you'd never ask :D

Large text sizes increased so they are truly large on the larger screens that have smaller pixel sizes.
Currently the 6xx series Large is much larger to view than the 7xx series Large.

The backlighting at night washes the colours out and things like black appear like a washed out dark grey, the more the brightness is turned up, the worse this gets.

On the map screen with the corner data fields dashboard enabled, the time and battery level indicators are a black colour with a white outline, day or night mode.
Great in day mode when the background is a light colour, but in night mode with a dark colour background, instead of changing to a solid white they remain black with a white outline, which for ageing eyes is almost impossible to see clearly, especially when moving.
Change the dashboard to anything else but corner data fields, none or automotive and you'll see the time and battery level display changes to fully white which is much easier to read.

A lot of the dashboards are of poor quality design and some of them waste far too much screen real estate, these could be done much better than they currently are.
Make the "custom" dashboard something that is actually user customisable, not just the ability to have a different, dashboard for navigating and not navigating which is now the case.

The permanent menu, at least on the map screen, should be able to be hidden, a setting to auto hide & show with a tap somewhere on the screen would be nice.

The ability with one of the data fields to always show the distance and direction to the nearest waypoint.
All the time not only when navigating to something.

When viewing the waypoint list and moving, the list would be of better use if it updated by putting the nearest waypoint on top as soon as it becomes the closest with regards to others on the list, and keeping them listed top to bottom in order of distance while moving and their distances change.
One current sort option does sort by distance, but when moving again it doesn't keep them in order of distance as their relevant positions change.
The arrows, distances and directional letters (letters shown when stopped) to each waypoint would be better if they were larger and easier to see, especially in night mode.
Dark grey for distance and dark green for direction is a poor choice for a dark background.

When moving slowly the guidance text still does not update until a speed faster than one can walk is achieved when not navigating, something Garmin informed me they would do with the Montana 6xx and 7xx series and with the 276CX, seems they forgot to do this with all of them, making the guidance text when not navigating and walking around completely useless
The guidance text could also be made much smaller, or perhaps a user option to set the sizes.

That's about all I can think of for now, no doubt I'll be reminded of other things that could have been done a bit better next time I use it... 8-)

All of the above I (and others) have suggested to Garmin more than once on their suggestions pages and all of it has so far been completely ignored :|

LOL, they might think they do
I think it's perhaps more of a set budget and maximum number of hours to work on them thing, once either runs out work or improvements might be stopped and only bugs fixed (mostly) thereafter.
Only guessing at that though, and as they only communicate with customers when absolutely necessary we'll probably never know for sure.
