Poor elevation resolution - any tips?

Unread post by _SoP_ »

Hi,

I currently own a fenix 6 pro and the GPSMap 67. While the fenix 6 pro shows and records elevation data very reliable, the GPSMap is always far off - IMHO too far.

Examples:

On a hike yesterday with clear sky and good GPS signal, the height difference was about 90-100m. I performed a "GPS calibration" which closed the gap between the fenix and the GPSMap pretty well, but just a few minutes later the difference was at the same range of 90-100m again.

On another hike at the coastline of Tenerife, the fenix was showing realistic 30m above sea level, while the GPSMap 67 was showing -33m.

I already contacted Garmin support, but their statement was that this would be normal for consumer devices. I had both the Montana 600 and an Oregon 400 before, and the altitude was always comparable to the fenix 3 or the fenix 6 pro. I have "continuous calibration" turned on, and checked if the EDM maps (elevation data model) are available on the device.

Are there any other good tips and tricks how to improve the elevation displayed on the GPSMap? I am not a newbie to the GPS devices and use Garmin devices since the Forerunner 305 in 2006, but with the GPSMap67 elevation issue, I am somehow clueless and disappointed.

Thanks for any suggestion and a happy new year to all!

Please test with Altimeter 'Auto Calibration' configured for 'Once' instead of 'Continuous', then calibrate it to known good value at beginning of your hike.

Thank you, GPSrChive.

In the meanwhile, I had a longer chat with Garmin support. It seems a software reset helped, but I need to verify in a real scenario. If verification fails, Garmin would replace my device. At least the support guy was aknowledging that the big difference between the fenix and the GPSMap is not normal.
During the chat, the GPSMap was showing 619m in an area of 520m. I perfromed a calibration using GPS data and then it showed 519m. A few minutes later, still in the chat, the GPSMap showed 617m again. Now, after the reset, when I switch it on, it shows between 517m and 523m until now, which would be appropriate.

I will keep you posted.
