Features
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly.
- The Montana 7x0 is the biggest thing to happen since... well... since the
Montana 6x0!
- A brief summary of noteworthy Montana 7x0 pros and cons are provided below.
The Good
-
Features that help elevate the Montana 7x0 above its peers:
The Bad
- Disappointing shortcomings that never should have made the cut:
- The same 8MP camera
first introduced in 2013 is only available on the 750i, while non-inReach
camera models (750, 760) are not available.
- A new 8MP camera introduced with the 760i lacks most of the features
available on previous models (Missing Features
12,
13,
14).
- Inability to lock Main Menu icon positions can result in unwanted and
unintentional configuration changes.
- Text entry cursor placement assistant available with previous Garmin
'Outdoor Recreation' models is MIA (see
Missing
Feature 3).
- Internal memory of only 16GB (700, 700i, 750i) is
insufficient to support updates for preloaded maps.
The Ugly
- Undesirable device behaviors that may contribute to a frustrating user
experience:
- inReach communication services frequently
stop working with all AT&T network devices, without any warning,
preventing SMS communication and location sharing between your inReach
device and any contacts on the AT&T network. These service interruptions
commonly last for several days without resolution, severely limiting the
users ability to communicate potentially life saving information with
friends or family when necessary.
- New routing code proprietary to the Montana 7x0 frequently ignores
embedded routing information available in many popular third party maps that
are properly recognized when used with previously released Garmin 'Outdoor
Recreation' models, including the Montana 6x0, Oregon 6x0/7x0, Rino 7x0,
GPSMAP 66, and others (see
Bug 25).
- Using the Map page
map layer selection menu to enable/disable TopoActive or City
Navigator maps always results in the corruption of user configured map
selections for the active profile. Individual map selection options for the
active profile will then require manual reconfiguration to restore original
profile settings, each and every time.
- An inability to differentiate between OSM based map products frequently
results in unwanted map layer configuration changes any time the Garmin
TopoActive maps are enabled/disabled via 'Automatic
Maps' or the Map page
map layer selection menu. If you desire unencumbered use of OSM
based maps on the Montana 7x0, we recommend creating a specific profile for
this purpose while abstaining from use of either of these features.
- Complex integration of
inReach tracking +
Activity recording controls that attempt to outsmart the user can
provide unpredictable tracking behaviors that may result in a loss of user data
and/or leave the user stranded without an uploaded breadcrumb trail directing
rescue teams to their location. Those who desire predictable and reliable
Activity tracking and/or inReach tracking
operation may want to consider using a Montana 700 in combination with an
external inReach device (most can be operated from the Montana 700 using
'inReach Remote').
- Database synchronization between the
Montana 7x0 and Explore app is frequently corrupted (see
Bug 18), resulting in lost
and/or duplicated
waypoints, tracks and routes in both locations. The work
required to identify and remove each individual duplicate waypoint, track
and route, especially for users with larger databases, can be a very tedious
and time consuming process that tests the very limits of ones patience and
sanity. Montana 7x0i users do not have the option of not using Explore, as
many inReach features will not function properly without Explore
synchronization. Therefore, we recommend using a Montana 700 with an external inReach device (most can be operated
from the Montana 700 using 'inReach Remote').
